Porsche Taycan 2025 makes big gains in range

Porsche newly placed Environmental Protection Authority range estimates for the Taycan line-up to its consumer website. These come from Porsche, as the Environmental Protection Agency Porsche has yet to publish any details for the updated electric sedan. Assuming real-world testing confirms what we’re told — never before in doubt with the Taycan — Porsche’s raft of small changes to the sedan’s platform will yield big rewards. Starting with the new range figures and the improvements:

As for how Porsche has made this possible, the first factor is the greater battery sizes with improved thermal management. The standard Performance package is up from 70 kWh to 89 kWh, the optional Performance Plus was 93 kWh but is now 105 kWh. The base Taycans are both rear-wheel drive, the only two pushers in the lineup; the others are all-wheel drive. Along with the 4S trim just above them, these trims come standard with the 89-kWh battery but can be specified with the 105-kWh battery. Every trim above the 4S comes standard with the larger package. The only two trims that see no change in range are both Turbos, one the base GT on 21-inch wheels that still gets an estimated 276 miles on a charge, the other the GT with the Weissach package also on 21-inch wheels that is rated to go 269 miles on a charge.

During our first ridePorsche claimed the rear-wheel drive/Performance Plus combination would go 35 percent further on the European WLTP cycle. The EPA’s estimate is a lower figure, but represents a similar improvement, with range for the base Taycan Performance Plus up 32 percent.

In addition, a more efficient rear motor with an improved inverter and new software, improved wheel aerodynamics, tires with lower rolling resistance and a more efficient heat pump ensure greater range. High speed brake regeneration increased by as much as 30 percent, according to Porsche. Not reflected in these figures: When an owner needs to top up the juice, the maximum charging speed increased from 270 kilowatts to 320 kW, maintained for longer and over a wider band of operating temperatures.
