We’ve known for a while that HMD is working on a Barbie phone. It seems that the original schedule had to be pushed back by a month, but now it’s official: the Barbie phone is coming on August 28th.
In February, the company already announced a new line-up with several phones planned for July, including a certain pink phone. The Horizon And Comb models arrived this month (assuming that was their original plan), while Barbie is fashionably late.
A look at the HMD x Mattel Barbie phone
We don’t know much about the Barbie Phone – it’ll be a flip phone, which suggests it’ll run either S30+ or KaiOS. This lines up with what HMD has said about it, which is that it’s being positioned as a “digital detox” phone that won’t let you doomscroll on social media.
Of course, the company is also working on a Detox Mode for the Skyline, so that’s one of its calling cards. That said, Android-powered flip phones (the non-folding kind) are exceedingly rare, so we’re expecting something akin to the Nokia 2780 Flip, for example.
The image of the phone shared on X shows the Barbie phone to be very, very pink – a color that’s becoming something of a signature color for HMD, after the Neon Pink Skyline attracted so much attention.
