Google has updated Maps and Waze with improved user interface elements to make it easier to find your destination and stay better informed about traffic and other road hazards.
First, Google Maps now has a large, easy-to-tap notification icon: tap it and select the relevant report. Other drivers passing the same spot can confirm with a single tap that the hazard is still there. Note that these reports come from both Google Maps and Waze users (and you can see which app was used to file the report, if you’re curious).
The improved incident reporting UI is rolling out globally starting today. It’s available on Google Maps for Android and iOS, cars with built-in Google functionality, and on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Google Maps is getting an easier-to-read destination guide soon. It highlights the building that’s your destination, including marking the entrance and showing nearby parking spots, so you know where to go at a glance.
The feature is rolling out globally in the coming weeks. It’s available on Google Maps for Android and iOS, cars with built-in Google functionality, and on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Waze will start showing you new types of cameras. You’ll be alerted to cameras that detect speeding, running red lights, and driving in the wrong lane (e.g. a bus lane), as well as cameras that can detect if you’re not wearing a seatbelt or on your phone.
This is now rolling out globally to the Waze app for Android and iOS.
Waze also lets you share real-time traffic information with friends. In the event of increased traffic or road closures due to sporting events, parades, etc. that affect areas you regularly drive through (or have saved in Waze), you’ll receive a notification with details about the event and road conditions. You can then share these details with friends and family to warn them, in case you know they’ll be driving through that area too.
This is now rolling out globally to Waze for Android and iOS.
Finally, Waze will soon gain the ability to continue providing navigation instructions even when your phone is locked. This includes turn instructions, traffic updates, and hazard warnings.
Lock screen navigation is available globally this month in the Android app, with the iOS version coming this fall.
