Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, made his expected return to the public’s attention on the Binance Blockchain week Wednesday in Dubai. This appearance is his first since serving four months in prison, which has changed his outlook on life and leadership.

CZ reflects on prison experiences

Speaking candidly on stage, CZ described his time in prison as ‘very restrictive’, offering insight into the introspective journey he experienced during his captivity. “Freedom was taken away; there was nothing to do but think,” he said, emphasizing the importance of family, friends and even the simple comforts of life, such as food and his bed.

This period of isolation forced the executive branch to reassess its priorities and emerge with a renewed understanding of what really matters. “I’ve learned to prioritize my needs,” he said, highlighting an important shift in his perspective.

When asked about his sentencegave CZ a brief overview of the settlement limiting its disclosure. He was charged with breach of bank secrecy in connection with inadequate anti-money laundering (AML) practices.

While acknowledging the severity of his situation, CZ accepted it as a crucial part of his journey, noting, “I took my time, and now we can move forward.” He pointed out that despite the ruling, the judge recognized his character, suggesting a sense of redemption in his experience.

Former Binance CEO embraces forced retirement

Interestingly, CZ’s time in prison allowed for unexpected interactions. Although many prisoners were curious about his background, he kept a low profile, noting, “People are very cold.”

The former Binance CEO noted that a surprising number of his fellow inmates were locked up for “minor infractions.” Reflecting on his unique position, he humorously noted that despite being “the richest person in prison,” he felt like “the poorest,” with only $200 to spend in the cafeteria.

When CZ switched from direct operational roles at Binance, he viewed his forced retirement as an opportunity for growth rather than a setback. “I cannot make decisions or fulfill operational roles. I have been forced to retire,” he explained.

However, CZ stated that he plans to use this time to explore new interests, especially in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, but also focused on mentorship within the crypto industry.

Zhao addressed rumors of a lifetime ban on managing crypto projects and clarified that no such restrictions exist in his country plea agreement. “I still work in the investment industry,” he confirmed.

It involved one of CZ’s funniest anecdotes from his time in prison interactions with the guards, many of whom were aware of his identity. He recounted how they asked which cryptocurrencies to buy, jokingly saying, “I better not say the wrong coin.” However, he clarified that he had no current insight into the crypto market.
