Google Reveals the Pixel 9 family on August 13, which is about two months earlier than normal. We have speculated before that this could be a strategy to prevent leaks, but in recent days we have already seen two practical videosthat clearly doesn’t work.

Anyway, a new report today claims that the Pixel9, Pixel 9 ProAnd Pixel 9 Pro XL will all feature ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors. Up until now, all Pixels have used optical in-display scanners, and now they’re apparently switching to the exact same sensor model that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S24 series.

Google Pixel 9 to get ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor

The 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) sensor is made by Qualcomm. Ultrasonic sensors don’t need to illuminate the part of the display your finger is touching in order to scan your print, and they’re generally faster and more reliable than optical sensors, so this is a nice step forward – oh, and ultrasonic sensors work even when your finger is wet.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will stick with a side-mounted capacitive sensor integrated into the power button, according to the same report.
