Cars.com released its 2024 American-Made Index, and it’s bad news for the 2023 headliner. While the Tesla Model Y still holds the number 1 position, the Model3 And Model X dropped from second and third place respectively, creating a gap just big enough for Honda to take a Passport through. While there weren’t too many shockers, the 2024 list highlights some shifts in production since last year.

If you have a sense of déjà vu, fear not; we to have already an “American made” list this year. That was the American University Kogod Business School’s ‘Made in America’ Index 2023which should have been published earlier than it was, but as explained in the results, it was delayed by some data issues. That list is more directly comparable to In recent years Auto’s.com list (note how many Teslas are at the top). Today’s list is for 2024.

That said, if you’ve perused American University’s list, you’ve probably noticed that their system results in a fair number of ties. The 2023 “top 10” list contains a whopping 27 entries. In the spirit of parity, we’ve included cars #11 through #27 from the Cars.com list above; as you can see, there’s a fair amount of overlap, despite the model year change. Without further ado, here’s Auto’s.com‘s list.

  1. Tesla Model Y
  2. Honda Passport
  3. Volkswagen ID.4
  4. Tesla Model S

There were a few notable climbers. The Tesla Model 3 dropped from second to 21st place — ouch — and the Acura MDX tumbled out of the top 10, dropping to 15th. Those and a few other shifts helped the Jeep Gladiator and Toyota Camry each climb 19 spots to enter the top 10, while the VW ID.4 benefited from Tesla’s declines to grab the #3 spot for 2024.

Honda’s assembly plants in Alabama and Ohio dominate this end of the finishing line. The first Michigan-built model — the Ram 1500 Classic — is #19, followed by the Mustang at #31 and the Cadillac CT5 at #37. The least American-made car on the list is the Nissan Rogue, which is built in Smyrna, Tennessee.
