Texas a lawsuit filed Tuesday against GM over years of alleged abuse of customer data and trust. New car owners were presented with a “confusing and highly misleading” process that was intended to keep them safe, but was “nothing more than a deceptively designed sales process” that handed their data over to GM to sell. The lawsuit alleges that at no point was selling driving data even suggested as a possibility, putting GM in violation of state consumer protection laws.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is demanding a jury trial and a minimum of $10,000 per violation (for each GM car sold in the state since 2015) and a hefty $250,000 surcharge in cases where the victim was over 65.

Texas seems to be flying high following a recent $1.4 billion settlement from Meta over other privacy concerns. This could be a way to solve all the pending budget problems in the Lone Star State.
