Try everything once.

That is a life philosophy that can get you into a lot of trouble. But hey, life is short. Before last weekend, I had never attended Japan’s annual celebration of the viewpoint, so it felt like time to dive in and discover what this, to me, strange world is all about.

Since 2015, StanceNation Japan has been held in Tokyo’s Odaiba events and entertainment district. This year’s event marked the first time it was held over two days and the first time it was combined with a music festival. Thirteen hundred cars took part – a new StanceNation Japan record.

Odaiba Ultra Park is a spectacular location and one of the main reasons I was attracted to the event. The Fuji Television Building dominates the eastern skyline, with a 1,300-ton titanium ball suspended in a mesmerizing network of pillars. An architectural marvel, it is one of my favorite designs by Kenji Tange. The Yurikamome Monorail is another, offering stunning views of the vast metropolis of Tokyo.

As I wandered through the rows of cars, one thing became clear: people love these machines. The sheer amount of time, money and energy put into achieving the perfect posture is commendable.

TobyThyerPhotography-20

But what exactly defines perfect posture? Have the wheels been kicked out as with the Back to the Future II DeLorean floating through time or hidden in the wheel arches like a broken Tomica?

There is an impressive variety of camber and fitment among stationary cars.

I tend towards the ones with a flush mount, but this slammed Volkswagen Karmann Ghia looked great with its wheels tucked away. It has the engine and transmission of a Type 3 car and rides on air suspension.

Daiki Hiroshima previously recommended Subaru Impreza WRX STI makes a statement with his aggressive attitude.

And this DC2 Honda Integra Type R was perfectly in the spotlight with its K-series engine.

A completely hidden Nissan Skyline? Why not!

I won’t bore you any longer with my commentary, so let’s meet further down the line. Look out for an amphibious truck, an octopus and another ultra-cool Honda. If anything catches your eye for a possible feature, drop me a line in the comments section.

Jun’s Group A-inspired, REINIK-powered R32 Skyline GT-R proves that attitude and race adjustments can successfully coexist in a build.

StanceNation Japan 2024 was also my first CYBERJAPAN experience, and I have to say, these girls are going fast! They released some good songs and the sound system was mega.

That was done day one. Will I see you here again tomorrow?

TobyThyerPhotography-159

Ready for day two? To my surprise there were quite a few new cars on display.

I would 100% use this Ford Probe every day.

Have you found the perfect posture yet? No, I don’t want to hear about the cars you have not like.

Although I don’t really like the booth scene, my experience at StanceNation Japan 2024 was surprisingly good. The atmosphere was super chill, the weather was milder after a sweltering summer, and with so many different postural styles to explore, there was something for everyone amidst one of the best backdrops of any event.

It’s true what they say: you have to try everything once.
